The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
