European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
