Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
